What is a Cpap Machine And What is a Cpap Machine used for?

Patients diagnosed with sleep apnea are recommended to use a respironics cpap machine, so first they may ask, well what is a cpap machine? I will briefly explain here exactly what a cpap machine is, then I will very briefly explain what a cpap machine is used for.

So firstly, what a cpap machine is, cpap stands for continuous positive airway flow, and that’s exactly what it does. It blows air through your airways to keep your airway open whilst you are sleeping. So without going into the whole science of what a cpap machine is, that pretty much sums it up. The cpap machine maintains a flow of air continuously at the correct pressure so to maintain a positive air flow.

Now to answer the question what a cpap machine used for, well a cpap machine is mostly used for people with conditions such as sleep apnea, where when the sufferer is sleeping, the muscles in the throat relax so much, that the airways are blocked, and quite frighteningly, the stop breathing for many periods at a time during the course of their sleep.

So the cpap machine is used with the sufferer putting a mask on there face, and having air pumped continuously through the night. There are mixed reviews on the advantages and disadvantages of using a cpap machine, but basically in a nutshell, that’s what a cpap machine is, and what it’s used for.

What is the benefit of a cpap machine though if the patient refuses to use it? Some try a the machine once, and the experience is so uncomfortable, that they refuse to use it again, so in which case it becomes redundant and a waste of money.

A cpap machine is normally the last resort taken by people with serious sleep apnea or severe problems with snoring, and they have ran out of any other options. The cpap machine is mostly needed by middle aged men, and also being overweight contributes very much to the condition that would require one to need a cpap machine.
